“In 1971, during the first year of our marriage, I helped my husband, Daniel Ellsberg, release to the press the top secret documents that came to be known as the Pentagon Papers, confirming that Congress and the American public had been misled into entering the war in Vietnam. Even though he faced going to prison for the rest of his life, Dan felt compelled to reveal the truth.

“We had both been inspired by the teachings of Gandhi, who lived with a deep respect for all life and a commitment to non-harming and nonviolence, even toward those he would call enemies. He called the principle behind this satyagraha, ‘holding to the truth.’ The power that arises from this practice was known as Truth-Force or Soul-Force.

“I remember the day Dan and I stood in front of a bank of cameras and shouting reporters, and he took full responsibility for the release of the papers. We were holding hands in the middle of that chaos, and it was as if we were in an electrical current of great power. I believe this was an experience of Truth-Force.

“There is a dimension of integrity that comes from recognizing our oneness and interconnection with all life. Each of us can access the power of Truth-Force when we act with that kind of integrity. Wholesome states, such as kindness, compassion, and service, open us to that power.”
